I. The commissioner of transportation shall, in consultation with the Secretary of Transportation or appropriate federal official of the United States as provided by subsection (f) of section 131 of Title 23, United States Code, provide within the rights-of-way for areas at appropriate distances from interchanges on the interstate system, on which signs, displays and devices giving specific information in the interest of the traveling public may be erected and maintained.
